An eternity passed before Robert’s erratic breathing came under control. Pacing in his room, he struggled with the fact that he was about to lose Maddie, all because of a stupid little stunt cooked up by Andy to prove his acting ability beyond any doubt.

Robert stopped in front of the French doors leading to the veranda beyond, and shook his head in misery. It had been Andy’s idea to walk on the beach and stop below Maddie’s window to see if he could convince her he was a woman. Robert instinctively knew it was a bad idea and had balked adamantly, calling it an act of cruelty. But Andy insisted, so determined he was to test his acting skills in a real trial ‘in the field.’ And Robert had given his word not to reveal Andy’s secret to anyone, so he couldn’t just tell Maddie the truth.

In his defense, Andy was quick to reassure that Maddie, if she was fooled at first, wouldn’t remain angry for long – especially after Robert had told him how he and Maddie had made love openly under the warm September sun that afternoon. Of course Robert didn’t share any details of how he had gloried in the feel of Maddie’s fingertips tracing the contours of his body, or how he had become mindless under the rain of her soft, tender kisses that had left him breathless, or the way she circled her velvety soft thighs around his waist and had urged him deep inside her…

The fiery redhead had even admitted to feeling jealous – all part of his ‘in-character’ performance.

A nervous flutter attacked Robert’s stomach, and he ran his fingers through his hair repeatedly at the memory. No wonder Maddie was devastated by the sight of him on the beach with what she assumed was another woman. Had the tables been turned, he would have believed the same thing – that he’d been heartlessly betrayed.

How could I have been so stupid to let Andy talk me into something like this?

The fluttering in is stomach turned into a sharp pain. He felt like smashing his fist through the wall to destroy the barrier separating him from Maddie. He’d screwed up royally, and now the damage was done, despite his friend’s reassurances when he’d talked him into playing along with that stupid stunt. Robert wanted to blame Andy for this mess, but he knew in his heart that it was his own fault – and his alone.

He forced his rapid breathing to calm. Maddie deserved to know the truth about Andy-Andrea, and, most of all, about his own feelings for her. But now was not the time to discuss things with her. She was angry and wouldn’t listen or believe a word he told her. And Andy had already gone home, leaving no opportunity to provide evidence showing what he claimed was actually true.
